Termites are social insects and live in caste oriented colonies. There are three principal castes in a termite colony that all work together to ensure the colonies survival. The soldier termite is tasked with the protection of the termite colony.
The soldier termite has oversized mandibles that are extremely effective in providing defense against predators or other colony threats; however, due to the size of the termites mandibles, the soldier is unable to feed itself and must rely on the worker termite for feeding assistance.
During predator attacks, the soldier will remain outside the colony and block entrances while worker termites repair any damage. Interestingly, some soldier termites are capable of commiting suicide by rupturing a large gland that emits an extremely sticky fluid that entangles invading predators.
