Don’t allow Hawaii termites and Hawaii roaches to bug you!

dont-let-hawaii-termites-and-hawaii-roaches-bug-youIf you’re like most people in Hawaii, being honest about your pest control needs or problems isn’t a priority until it’s too late. Hawaii pest controlsurveys show that home-owners will not schedule a pest inspection until a home is currently experiencing an infestation. This can mean lost time and money, as a pest infestation will not only require tent fumigation or ground termite treatment, but can also mean repairing any structural damage.

“Every homeowner should schedule a pest inspection at the start of the year,” said David Melton, general manager of Kama’aina Termite and Pest Control. “You may not need any pest control services, but if you do, it can save you thousands simply by being proactive,” says Melton.

Melton also notes that pest inspections are usually free for those covered by a termite warranty; but even if your warranty has expired, a Pest Control inspection is only around $100 and well worth the investment.

According to Melton, the era of the smart phone has ushered in a new way to start the pest control inspection process. “These days everyone has a smart phone, so if you suspect you may have an infestation, or just want to be sure, snap a photo and email it to us,” Melton says.

Here are four of the most common types of pest infestations in Hawaii and what to do:
1. Termites

There’s a reason any mention of hawaii wood termites can send shudders up a homeowners spine. An infestation can be hard to detect, and they can cause immense structural damage if left untreated. It’s important to take notice of termite droppings, groups of winged insects or discarded wings. These are probably termite swarmers looking to establish new colonies.
Preventative Measures:
Inspect areas of water damage for evidence of wood termites. They are drawn to water sources and will establish colonies near water sources such as sprinklers, hose bibs, or pools of water against your foundation.

2. Ground Termites

Ground or subterranean termites construct mud tubes in order to enter a home or building. Any evidence of a mud tube should immediately be addressed by a pest control specialist in order to determine type, severity and proper termite control methods. Use extreme caution if deciding to use a DIY treatment.
Preventative Measures:
Ensure foliage and grass is cut back from the homes exterior, gaps or holes are sealed with caulk or a screen, and exterior paint is in good condition.

3. Cockroaches

Everyone hates hawaii cockroaches inside their homes, but not all cockroaches are created equal. While the larger American cockroach causes homeowners to gasp in disgust, it’s the smaller cousin, the German cockroach that’s the disease carrier. Cockroaches are nocturnal, and prefer dark, wet spaces to live and breed. Keep an eye out for cockroach feces and oval-shaped egg cases for evidence of an infestation.
Preventative Measures:
All food should be stored in airtight containers and counters and floors cleaned of any food debris. Most home pests in Hawaii such as ants and rodents are drawn to easily available food sources. Additionally, trash cans should never be stored close to the home, as trash is a major pest attractant.

Rodents in Hawaii can be extremely destructive and infestations can be challenging to completely exterminate. Rodents carry a variety of bacteria, viruses and diseases that can be transmitted to humans. Presence of a single rodent usually indicates an established population, and you should contact a pest control specialist immediately.

Preventative Measures:
Ensure your home has no entry points such as a gap beneath an exterior door or holes in a screen—remember, rodents can squeeze through holes as small as a nickel. Eliminate water sources such as leaking pipes or clogged drains as rodents will breed near water and food sources.
