Spot treatments using pesticides on specific areas are a corrective method of termite control. In comparison to fumigation spot treatments are no guarantee of total eradication of drywood termites. This method is less reliable due to the fact that treatment occurs only to areas that have been identified as having drywood termites, but very likely may miss other areas that have gone undetected. Spot treatments are only good at treating known areas of drywood termite activity.
Spot treatments are less expensive and more convenient than tent fumigation, but the tradeoff is that they are also less reliable. A successful spot treatment comes down to the ability of a qualified technician to identify and find all of the drywood termite activity in your home. There are several different methods that can be used to perform spot treatments of your house
This product is biodegradable and is only effective if termites come into direct contact with lumber treated in this manner. Orange oil based products have a high content of citric acid which kills termites that feed on it. This product does not have an unpleasant odor nor does it require you to leave your home during treatment.
Borates are mineral based substances which are poisonous to pests. Many times lumber is treated with borates before inclusion into the building process to help prevent termites. Borates can be useful in getting rid of small termite infestations. The borates can only be applied to bare wood due to the fact that they are water-soluble. Borates can be applied by brushing them directly onto wood, by spraying, and by pressure injecting through holes drilled into the wood.
Using the freezing liquid nitrogen is another type of spot treatment. This method is a very targeted approach which requires drilling holes into the structure where the nitrogen is then injected into. The critical component to this method of spot treatment is the accurate detection of the location of the infestation. If any area goes undetected then it will not be eliminated by this type of treatment.
