Pre-construction soil treatments are a preventative way to guard against subterranean termites. This type of treatment provides a chemical shield to repel any possible routes termites might take to get into your home. Soil treatments guard against termite entry through the open spaces of utility lines like the crevices at plumbing stub outs as well as joints in the concrete.
The best time to do a soil treatment is right before the pouring of concrete for the foundation. It is optimal for the soil treatment to occur once the fill has been compacted and the rough plumbing and utility lines have been installed. The ideal situation is for the concrete to be poured no more than 24 hours after the soil treatment. If for some reason more time is required between the pour of the concrete and the soil treatment then the area of the treatment must be covered to keep the termiticide from breaking down, but the pour must occur no more than 72 hours from the time of the treatment. Because of these time constraints it is crucial that builders coordinate these two activities carefully.
Soil treatments vary in cost based on a number of variables. The primary component is size of the area to be treated, but other factors such as the location and warranty requirements also come into play.
